Grief Compounded

Dementia/Alzheimers is not a linear disease. Each experience is as unique as the person suffering. Every caregiver has their own dynamic and carries that weight alone.

Watching a loved one decline is tragic; the continual loss incremental, yet monumental. The variables are many, the wins are few. Good days happen; offering glimpses of who they were before this all began.

The saddest part is when your loved one expresses awareness of the condition and you can see in their eyes the struggle and pain they are trapped in, yet there is nothing you can do to help them. All you can do is serve. Advocating and assisting them in daily living needs.

Cycling between heartbreak, frustration and numbness is exhausting and robs you from cherishing those moments of alertness and clarity.

Grief is on a low simmer and the dread and anxiety of what may unfold keeps you clinging to each day as if it were the last.

Dementia is relentless and cruel. The patient and loved ones all suffer.

  2. It somehow seems you know exactly what I am going through right now. My mom suffers from dementia and sis-in-law has been sharing audios of their conversations. One day she is lucid and totally aware of where she is. The next day she is confused and angry and the after she is puzzled why she can’t remember things. It is so heartbreaking to see/hear her so bewildered and lost. Thank you for writing this. ❤️❤️

    1. Hi Punam, I’m so sorry to hear about your Mom. It’s difficult, exhausting and sad for everyone involved.😔I think the unpredictability and uncertainty surrounding the disease makes it most challenging to navigate. ❤️🤗

      1. It is decidedly very exhausting and challenging but she is 95 and otherwise healthy. We have accepted it as ageing, for some parts of the body will decline with age. And I believe acceptance makes it easier to bear. ❤️🤗

      2. Same situation here! And yes, I keep reminding myself that ‘acceptance’ is the key. 🔑 🤗❤️
