Baggage Claim

A decades long dance

cat and mouse

back and forth

She never knew him

He never knew her

Flights crossing

Wrong time zones

He always came late

She never came at all

Conveniently inconvenient

For both of them

His youth

Her age

Eventually merging time and space

Yet far too late

A classic case of bad timing

Missed flights

Late nights

She hid her tears

He concealed his fears

Ambiguity and distraction

Crossed with passionate connection

Led to no fruition

Blind trust eventually eroded

Her loneliness matched his alone-ness

They shared unspoken knowing

About how life works

Yet, she still often wondered

If he was someone other

That’s why when he left the bag

She yearned to see

Tempted, there was no lock or key

Maybe she’d find the truth within

She considered all of this

And changed her mind

Handing it back to him

She watched him walk away for the very last time.
